Obviously shamed by Satellite 1's 50th anniversary commemoration of Sputnik in 2007, Russian Post is now playing catch-up by issuing 55th anniversary stationary. So if you want a nice postcard with a Sputnik cancellation stamp, then go for it. Alternatively, keep your money and spend it at Satellite 4 for real-time celebrations of all space adventures.

Astrocalligraphy

The folks over at My Galaxies invite you to enter any message — including punctuation, numbers, and so on — which they will then recreate using images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which have been painstakingly matched up with the various symbols by a team of volunteers. Originally used as part of an April Fool's spoof scientific paper, this work is now available for your amusement.

Happy Birthday to Voyager!

Let's all raise a glass to Voyager 1, which has just completed 35 years of operation! The probe continues to explore the interface between the solar system and interstellar space, and the JPL team think that it may keep going until the end of the decade at least. Here's hoping it can outlive their expectations and see in the big five-oh!

In the Navy - new uses for Eastercon

From NavalToday.com 29/8/12: 'U.S. Naval Research Laboratory’s Tactical Satellite-4 successfully completes three weeks of intense testing.'

Which is all fine and dandy, but begs the question how do the US Navy plan to use Satellite 4 as a tactical weapon? We did ask them but they were a bit vague on the detail. So, now we are asking you to suggest ways that Satellite 4 could be used as a WMD. Please post your suggestions on our Facebook or Twittter pages. There might even be a prize for the best suggestion!

London Wins Worldcon Bid!

Congratulations to London 2014 – now Loncon 3 – on winning the bid to host the World Science Fiction Convention in 2014.
